Caravan to class-2

The kids have been prepped for our visit today, and maybe because of the festival and the proximity to Timbuktu, they are more familiar with the sight of toubabs, and there are smiles and laughter and lots of handshaking and photo taking.
The second village, Mora, has a smaller school in the process of renovation, and the kids are learning their French and their letters as new rows of brick are cemented on to build the walls. Hopefully donations to Caravan to Class  will provide funds for uniforms for this school. In addition, Caravan to Class will assume responsibility for five additional schools in the area in June 2012, upping the need level exponentially.
Education is the best possibility for a way out of the cycle of marginal living and despair and ultimately anger and violence that is a consequence of hopelessness. Hope you also check out (and like) Caravan to class on facebook as well. And if by a bit of synchronous magic you are in touch with a foundation that offers grants for such important grassroots enterprises, please be in touch on the Caravan website.

Caravan to Class

On our second morning in Timbuktu, we meet Hamadou Toure at his NGO office, Nord Dev. Hamadou has partnered with Barry Hoffner and is the on site liaison and administrator for Caravans to Class. Because of the terrorism incidents in December, Mali Travel Tours was a bit hesitant about our traveling to outer villages in the Timbuktu area; we persisted and it felt totally safe and comfortable for us as we drove through a bare and sandy landscape, first to the completed school with four classrooms , serving the pre-school through middle school population in the town of Tedeini. We didn’t see the schools at their fullest cause so many kids were in town at the Festival. The kids are adorable in their attractive printed uniforms, the headmaster and teachers bubble with enthusiasm, the administrative structure is well defined, french lessons are neatly posted on the blackboards, and lunch is prepared daily in an onsite kitchen. Additional learning tools for reading and writing have been provided by the NGO USAID.
